Reverse the Bounce Rate on Your Blog – Here’s How

Bounce rate may not lie to you but there is a chance that you will be deceived by it. Bounce rate can be simply defined by saying that it is the number of people who land on your site and leave without visiting any other page. The bounce rates help you analyze if your website is being attracted by the right audience. It also helps in checking if your website is up to the mark.

There are many other situations which can increase bounce rate:

  • If a user clicked on a link sent to him by his friend and leaves after reading just the information on that page.
  • User browses homepage and leaves in a minute or two.
  • User found your page through search engine. He left the page available in the window and started to work on other windows and session timed out.

Remember, if your bounce rate is high, this means you are not making a good first impression.

1. Prioritize & Optimize

Compare good and bad pages of your site on the bases of highest volume entry and landing pages. Analyze the relation between referrals and clicks. Find the turn off for users and replace it with the best page landing approaches. Experiment with the page design to attract users if your traffic rate is less than 1000 views/week.

2. Utilize Profiling and Segmentation

The bounce rate varies with the language, geography, operating system and browser. Monitor the rates for these factors. In some cases, the bounce rate for Firefox maybe more than the Internet Explorer. In this case, the issue is browser rendering.

3. Maintain Keyword Integrity

The keywords in your own metadata must have a low bounce rate. Also ensure this term is shown in the content as it is. To reduce the bounce rate it is essential to have a brand or site name that has low chance of bouncing.

4. Improve Loading Times

The importance of landing page is very crucial. A good loading page means your visitor will stay on your page and will help improving the SEO factor. To have a faster loading time, deactivate plug ins that are unnecessary. Your images and codes should be optimized to speed up your webpage loading time. With a fast loading of page, there is more chance of the visitor to browse more in your website.

5. Don’t Get Tricky

To lower your bounce rates there are many tricks which you can sue but this does not mean that they are good tricks. Embedding polls, attention grabbing clickable content and contests are tactics which may lower your bounce rate but they will adversely affect the authenticity of your site for the user.

This should be kept in mind that the mission of a website is to sell, entertain or inform the users. If your website is doing that, your bounce rate will lower on its own!

    Hi Annetta,

I think the bounce rate also affects search engine rankings, I’m not sure, but if heard some talk about this.

But if you’ve got a niche site where your goals is to get people to click on adsense ads a high bounce rate would not be such a bad thing.

Very useful information Annetta, thank you for posting this.

    • Yes, bounce rate do affect the search engine ranking. If your content is ranked high on SERP but every click from SERP is a bounce, they can detect it easily.

Well, regarding AdSense: It may be good, but you may not rank in SERP for long.

I think it is save to stay within the industrial average of bounce rate which is 40%-60% for content site.
